What is mesothelioma? Mesothelioma is an extremely rare form of cancer, detected when malignant cancer cells are found within the mesothelium. In short, mesothelioma is cancer of the mesothelium. The mesothelium is a membrane that covers a majority of the body’s internal organs. The disease forms when the mesothelium cells grow to be irregular and divide without organization or categorization. When this process begins, the cells can infiltrate any nearby tissues and organs.
Because mesothelioma is an extremely difficult form of cancer to control there are several organizations, such as The National Cancer Institute, that are continuously offering clinical trials to better aid in the treatment and understanding of advanced, localized and recurrent malignant mesothelioma.
